Sangoma Introduces Highest Density Transcoding Card!

Posted by laurenb @ Wed, 24 Nov 2010 17:55:09 -0500

Sangoma Introduces the Highest Density Voice Transcoding Card Available on the Market Today

New D500 Card Delivers Up to 2,000 Simultaneous Transcoding Sessions With Optimum Voice Quality and Industry Leading Cost for IP Telephony/VOIP Applications

The D500 is both standalone and accessible via IP networks. This means it can be installed in the same server where your telecom applications run or it can be pooled in dedicated transcoding server farms for maximum deployment flexibility. Either way, the voice transcoding processing is performed on the card, freeing up the host CPU to do other tasks. Most IP telephony applications require the use of multiple types of voice codecs, which are used to digitally compress the voice signals. This can be done to save bandwidth by using G.729 codecs or to enhance the voice signal by using HD codecs (such as G.722.1). As more and more VoIP networks get deployed and interconnected, there are instances where there will be mismatches of codec capabilities between two endpoints, creating the need to transcode (mediate and adapt between various codecs).
The D500 card, available in a compact PCIe form factor, offers developers and integrators the ability to convert up to 2,000 sessions on a single board and supports a long list of codecs such as G.711, G.723.1, G.729ab, HD Voice (G.722.1) GSM and AMR. Moreover, these codecs are generally indemnified, meaning there are no additional costs other than the price of the D500 hardware.
The new transcoding portfolio from Sangoma is used on both open source and proprietary applications. In the open source world, the D500 software drivers (like those of Sangoma’s other transcoding cards), provide “plug-and-play” capabilities for both Asterisk® and FreeSWITCH®, two leading open source telephony projects. With the compatible drivers, the open source telephony platforms can use the D500 cards as seamless voice transcoding resources. This means that existing Asterisk and FreeSWITCH applications can readily start leveraging the D500 capabilities. Further, the open source telephony software can be used as a gateway or session border controller to provide network-based transcoding services.

INVITE of death, does this spell doom for VoIP?

Posted by sarahk @ Thu, 19 Mar 2009 11:40:27 -0400

by Peter Cox Founder and CEO of UM Labs Ltd.

The last couple of weeks have seen two significant VoIP vulnerability reports. The first, with the alarming name INVITE of Death, reported a vulnerability in an open source security product where a single malformed call request (or INVITE) can trigger a service failure (see http://ims-bisf.nexginrc.org/OpenSBC-vul.html). The tested product uses a popular SIP stack and so the same problem may appear in other products.
The second vulnerability, with the comparatively mundane name of SIP Digest authentication relay attack, is technically much more complex. The vulnerability was originally discovered by INRIA, a French National Research Institute and has now been documented in an Internet Draft.
The attack relies on making a call to a target device and then sending  a carefully designed sequence of valid messages which trick the target device into authenticating a second call made by the attacker. An attacker could use this technique to make calls via a commercial service provider at the victim’s expense. This is yet another example of a toll-fraud attack, a topic that I have discussed before.

Far from spelling doom for VoIP, the Invite of Death attack simply demonstrates that VoIP is affected by exactly the same types of vulnerabilities as any other IP application. In this case a simple implementation error leaves the application open to a remote Denial of Service attack. This vulnerability has already been fixed by the product developers.
The relay attack is more of a concern. The attack is made possible by protocol design features. This means that careful planning and implementation and well designed security controls are needed to protect against the threat.
Both of these vulnerabilities underline an important point. VoIP applications are open to application level security threats which can disrupt the service or allow an attacker to gain privileged access to the system.
Application level threats require application level security controls. So if you are relying on a generic firewall to protect your voice system, the chances are that it will not block or even detect these threats.

Channel Dilemma for Voice and Unified Communications

Posted by timl @ Fri, 28 Nov 2008 13:14:32 -0500

In recent conversations with vendors selling telephony and unified communications solutions, I get asked the same question over and over – can you recommend a great channel partner for our SMB products?  The struggle stems from the benefits and new features available with VoIP and unified communications. Selling, installing and supporting IP-based phone systems require new skill sets that few traditional telephony resellers currently have.  Data solution providers with experience in network and server support  possess the technical ability but lack the sales experience and knowledge in telephony.

Here is a great example, just last week I received a phone call from one of our telephony partners installing a IP PBX at a customer site.  After 20 minutes of troubleshooting with the reseller, we realized that the technician had little to no knowledge of servers or hardware – we identified the problem as a faulty motherboard and had our vendor ship a new one overnight to the customer site.  The technician then damaged the motherboard when installing the CPU chip causing a larger problem.  We located another partner, a data solution provider that arrived onsite and resolved the issue in a matter of minutes. I think this summarizes the current state of the channel for voice and unified communications in the SMB market – telephony resellers will generate faster sales but data solution providers can deliver the support needed to keep customers happy.

So who should vendors partner with, data solution providers or telephony resellers?  Both.

VoIP is a fast-growing industry that is currently underserved in the SMB market.  There is an excellent opportunity for solution providers to secure first-mover advantage in many local and regional markets.  If you are a data solution provider,  it is worth the investment to train your sales team on voice and unified communications – consider hiring a sales representative with telephony experience that can share their knowledge with other members of your team.  For telephony resellers, take the time to train your sales team on solution-selling and partner with a data solution provider that can fulfill your needs for network support.

Resellers that focus on solution selling, offer network support, and have a working knowledge of voice/unified communications will have vendors knocking at their door with marketing dollars ready to spend.  Trust me, they are already asking.
