WatchGuard Technologies – UTM Champion and Value Award Winner |
![]()
Info-Tech Research Group Vendor Landscape Report Positions WatchGuard as UTM Vendor Champion and Bestows WatchGuard with their “Value Award”
In its analysis, Info-Tech Research Group evaluated ten competitors in the networking perimeter Unified Threat Management (UTM) market, including: Cisco, CheckPoint, Fortinet, Juniper, McAfee, Palo Alto Networks, and others. Based on their analysis of product features, affordability, usability, architecture, and vendor viability, strategy, reach and channel, WatchGuard was deemed to be a Champion due to its “balance of strong product and vendor capabilities at a market-leading price point, [WatchGuard] leads with a UTM solution that can deliver benefits to any organization.”
“It is an honor to be recognized as both a UTM Vendor Champion and Value Award winner by Info-Tech Research Group,” said Eric Aarrestad, VP Marketing for WatchGuard Technologies. “WatchGuard’s UTM solutions were compared side-by-side with some of the industry’s most well known networking and security vendors, and without question, the analysis concluded that no other UTM vendor ranked higher than WatchGuard.”
Info-Tech Research Group set a high standard for its UTM Vendor Landscape analysis. At a minimum to qualify UTM Vendors had to pass a “table stake” threshold of firewall, VPN, anti-malware and intrusion prevention requirements. Additional advanced feature analysis included: identity-based control, data leakage protection (DLP), network access control, URL filtering, application control, Wi-Fi network control, WAN routing and optimization and encrypted data control.

Posted in WatchGuardThe Impact of Storage on Your Virtualization Success |
Virtualization can reduce the physical footprint and operational costs of IT by reducing the number of physical servers in the environment.
But beyond server consolidation, virtualization can make IT run more efficiently. Servers and applications can be deployed faster, there is a reduction in management overhead, and server availability can be improved, even to the extent of making disaster recovery a reality for smaller companies that could never afford to invest in a standby physical environment.
A virtualized server environment can achieve all these things, but the role of storage in the virtualized environment is a critical component that can enhance or cripple all the goals of a virtualization project.
Availability
Virtualization provides new ways of keeping workloads running. Because the operating system and applications are abstracted from the hardware, it is possible to move workloads between hardware very quickly if a physical server experiences downtime, planned or otherwise. Virtualization platforms from Citrix, Microsoft and VMware all offer high availability and live migration features. Regardless of which virtualization platform you use, consider how storage impacts the availability of VMs.
Most obviously, these features all require shared storage to support rapid movement of VMs between hosts, so direct attached storage on a hypervisor won’t help availability. Less obviously, once your virtualization platform is using shared storage, any improvement in availability is now also subject to the uptime of that underlying storage system. The storage must be able to sustain operations when drives, fans, motherboards, power supplies, or network ports fail somewhere in the storage.
Finally, there is available, and then there is available. If a prospective love interest says they are available but takes forever to return messages and is generally unresponsive, one might debate how available they actually are. In the same way, the availability of your VMs is dependent on the performance of the storage. Growth in a virtual environment constantly puts additional I/O load on the storage. Many storage systems were never designed to accommodate this type of workload. They were designed to accommodate additional capacity, but the performance is fixed. Once the demands of your virtual environment tap out the storage controller, adding more VMs will only slow everything. Storage used for virtualization should have the ability to scale performance out, ensuring consistent responsiveness of the VMs for true availability.

Is it time to switch to unified storage? |
- Are you looking to implement virtualization, or seeing pressure on your storage from over-exuberant virtualized growth?
- Has disaster recovery, backup, or replication become a pain point?
- Do you feel like you are wasting some of the unused storage sitting directly attached to some servers, while purchasing more and more disks for other servers.
- Have past storage purchases resulted in the need to share data across two or more islands of storage?
If so, it may be time to adopt a unified scale-out storage system that combines SAN and NAS protocols in a single system with the capability to grow with you.
Direct attached storage, or DAS, is the most basic level of storage. DAS is directly connected to a single server and can only be accessed by that one server. This may be fine for environments with no more than a couple servers where storage capacity requirements are fairly static. The benefit of DAS is that it’s simple to deploy and has a lower initial cost than networked storage. However, if your company anticipates rapid data growth and wants to get the most out their spending, consider a networked storage model because DAS is limited in its scalability and features. Since resources are not shared beyond a single server in DAS, systems may use as little as half of their full capacity. One DAS system might be completely full while the available space on other systems can’t be accessed.
Network attached storage, or NAS, shares file level data across servers and clients on a network. NAS is ideal for simple, cost-effective data sharing for multiple clients at the file level. Network shares allow important data to be centrally managed and shared. In contrast to DAS, the utilization rate with NAS can be high since storage is consolidated. Also, IT administrators can centrally manage NAS systems, thus reducing management time and costs. But for application data, not every application can use networked storage. Many applications will only work with storage that is on the server where the application is installed.
