Malicious Office Documents Could Open Doors into Your Network

Posted by laurenb @ Wed, 20 Apr 2011 16:32:03 -0400

Summary:

* These vulnerabilities affect: Most current versions of Microsoft Office, and the components that ship with it
* How an attacker exploits it: Typically by enticing one of your users to open a malicious Office document
* Impact: In the worst case, an attacker executes code on your user’s computer, gaining complete control of it
* What to do: Install Microsoft Office updates as soon as possible, or let Microsoft’s automatic update do it for you

Exposure:

As part of today’s Patch Day, Microsoft released two security bulletins describing eleven vulnerabilities found in Excel and other components that ship with most current versions of Microsoft Office for Windows and Mac.

Though the eleven vulnerabilities differ technically, and affect different Office components, they result in the same problem. If an attacker can entice one of your users into downloading and opening a maliciously crafted Office document, he can exploit any of these vulnerabilities to execute code on a victim’s computer, usually inheriting that user’s level of privileges and permissions. If your user has local administrative privileges, the attacker gains full control of the user’s machine.

According to Microsoft’s bulletins, an attacker can exploit these flaws using many different types of Office documents. In one bulletin, Microsoft specifically states Excel documents are vulnerable. However, they also mention any “Office files” in their other alert. Therefore, we recommend you beware of all unexpected Office documents.

If you’d like to learn more about each individual flaw, drill into the “Vulnerability Details” section of the security bulletins listed below:

* MS11-021: Nine Excel Code Execution Vulnerabilities, rated Important
* MS11-023: Two Office Code Execution Vulnerabilities, rated Important

Scale-out storage big winner in 2010

Posted by laurenb @ Wed, 20 Apr 2011 13:35:49 -0400

Read why scale-out storage is the future of data storage and how Scale Computing is leading the way.

While early adopters of scale-out storage have predominantly been firms with large capacity requirements in specific industry verticals, the technology is gaining traction among enterprise users as a viable, broad-based storage infrastructure option. Accentuating the technology’s capabilities and compelling value proposition in tandem will only serve to accelerate a widespread market acceptance of scale-out storage.

Server virtualization is another driver. There’s a mismatch between the flexible and mobile capabilities of virtual server environments and the hard-mapped, stovepiped nature of traditional scale-up systems. Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) recently conducted research on why organizations are struggling to deploy virtualization more pervasively.

Scale Computing positioned in Magic Quadrant!

Posted by laurenb @ Tue, 12 Apr 2011 16:47:06 -0400

Scale Computing Positioned in Leading Analyst Firm’s Magic Quadrant for Midrange and High-End NAS Solutions

Evaluation Based on Completeness of Vision and Ability to Execute

Scale Computing, a developer and manufacturer of intelligent, clustered storage solutions tailored to the virtualization and archiving needs of the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME), today announced that Gartner, Inc. has recognized Scale in its 2011 Magic Quadrant for Midrange and High-End NAS Solutions report*.  Scale is positioned in the Niche Players quadrant.

According to Gartner, “Vendors in the Niche Players quadrant are often narrowly focused on specific market or vertical segments, such as SMBs or high-performance computing (HPC), that are generally underpenetrated by the larger midrange and high-end NAS vendors. This quadrant may also include vendors that may have products that address the broad market but are still ramping up their overall go-to-market efforts and have yet to develop the vision or the execution to break out of the Niche Players quadrant.”

“We are focused on delivering scale-out storage solutions that offer the features needed by SMEs, and at a price that fits within their budget,” said Jeff Ready, CEO and co-founder, Scale Computing.  “Our intelligent storage solution is perfectly suited for virtualization implementations, providing an affordable storage solution that is able to scale with both capacity and performance.  As our traditional competitors push non-unified, non-scalable Generation 2.0 technology not ideal for virtual strategies, demand for our offering positions Scale Computing for continued growth.”

Trend Micro Threat Report Highlights Cloud Security Needs

Posted by laurenb @ Tue, 12 Apr 2011 16:23:36 -0400

by Matthew Weinberger on 4.4.11

Trend Micro‘s newly released Threat Report indicates that spam e-mails are declining, but there’s a new threat worth noting: so-called “toolkits” that turn anyone with a computer into a dangerous hacker with the push of a few buttons. It’s bad news for the enterprise. But it could be good news for cloud service providers that focus on security as a service.

Here are some key findings from Trend Micro’s report, as per the press release:

  • Overall spam levels are down thanks to global crackdowns on the offending parties, but the US and India still took the first and second spots on the most-spammed list. Interestingly, Trend Micro is crediting India’s appearance on the list to the country’s growing presence on the Internet.
  • It’s not illegal to send spam in Russia — which might account for why it was the top spam generator for the fourth quarter of 2011. And Trend Micro also says that Russia was a major source of messages with malicious URLs embedded.
  • The top victims of malware were the U.S. and China.
  • Hackers are targeting smartphone users with SMS messages and e-mails that contain links to malicious code – and Google Android users are especially at risk due to the fact that the OS is both very popular and is- well, was [NOTE: Please link to Dave's Android story from today when it's live] – open source.

All this data comes from the 3.2 terabytes of messaging data Trend Micro claims to sift through on a daily basis. And naturally, Trend Micro is promoting their own cloud security solutions to protect users from these kinds of messaging-based attacks.

But whether you go with Trend Micro or not, it’s pretty clear by now that there’s plenty of opportunity for the savvy channel pro to leverage the cloud and reduce their customer’s eternal burden of spam.

What is SIP?

Posted by laurenb @ Tue, 12 Apr 2011 13:03:55 -0400

What is SIP?

SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is the IETF signaling protocol for presence, messaging, VoIP, audio/video conferencing and events notification that is becoming for person-to-person IP-communications what HTTP is for the Web. SIP initiates call setup, routing, authentication and other feature messages to endpoints within an IP domain. Most importantly, the SIP protocol allows for users of different service providers to communicate with each other. Using SIP, IP telephony becomes as easy to use as any other Web application and integrates easily into other Internet services.

SIP has been widely adopted by a number of the industry’s leading providers, including Microsoft®, AOL, WorldCom, CommWorks, Cisco Systems and Yahoo!. Industry analysts predict that SIP will become the standard protocol no later than 2004.

SIP is coming, and bringing with it the ability for users of instant messaging, presence, conferencing, and other realtime communications functions to find and communicate with users of any SIP-based provider around the world.

To learn more please visit http://www.ingate.com/Moreonsip.php

“Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) management across firewalls integrates many forms of communications with data and processes safely across corporate and consumer boundaries. This opens a huge opportunity for integrated instant messaging and VOIP services to be brought to the mainstream and mission-critical environments.”
